1D Diatomic Lattice — Phonon Dispersion

A diatomic chain (alternating masses M and m) has two phonon branches: acoustic (both atoms move in phase, ω→0 as k→0) and optical (atoms out of phase, gap at zone boundary). The gap at k=π/a depends on the mass ratio M/m.
