A rectangular room traps standing waves (room modes) at frequencies f(m,n) = (c/2)√((m/Lx)² + (n/Ly)²) where c≈343 m/s. The mode (1,0) has one pressure node along the width; (0,1) along the depth; (1,1) is the first oblique mode. Nodes (blue) are quiet; antinodes (red) are loud. Bass traps target these pressure maxima. Click anywhere to place a microphone.
