Umklapp Phonon Scattering

In a crystal, phonon momentum is only conserved modulo a reciprocal lattice vector G. When k₁+k₂ = k₃+G (Umklapp), the resulting phonon is folded back into the first Brillouin zone — this provides thermal resistance and limits heat conductivity.
